Shortly after the second of those efforts, the game had to be stopped after trouble in the stands spilled over onto the pitch – with away supporters appearing to have gained entry to the home end.

There were a little over 10 minutes left on the clock when the cup derby, which always promised fireworks, had to be brought to a halt. Police forces were quick on the scene, but a number of supporters ended up on the playing field. Scuffles broke out around the ground, with the Birmingham Road End seeing the biggest disturbance.
It was quickly decided that the players should be removed from the field, as they headed back down the tunnel. Some of the stars on show made a point of removing their children from the area of the ground where most of the trouble was occurring.
